Zikr Aayaat and Hadith

Al-Bayhaqee relates from Ibn 'Umar radiallaahu 'anhu that AlIah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:"For everything there is a polish, and the polish for the hearts is the Zikr (remembrance) of Allah. There is nothing more potent in saving a person from the punishment of Allah than the Zikr of Allah." It was said: Not even Jihad in the path of Allah. So he replied: "Not even if you were to continue striking with your sword until it breaks."
SIGNIFICANCE OF ZIKR ALLAH: Sahih Muslim Hadith 7178; Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: Since our acceptance of Islam and the revelation of this verse (57.16) in which Allah has shown annoyance to us, there was a gap of four years.
Surah Al-Hadid 57, Ruku 2, ayat 16:
Has not the time arrived for the Believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of Allah and of the truth which has been revealed (to them) and that they should not become like those to whom was given Revelation aforetime but long ages passed over them and their hearts grew hard? For many among them are rebellious transgressors.
DOING ZIKR TWICE A DAY IN THE MORNING AND EVENING: Surah Al-Kahf Ruku 4, ayat 28
And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us one who follows his own desires whose case has gone beyond all bounds.
ZIKR OF THE NAME OF ALLAH AND WITH COMPLETE CONCENTRATION: Surah Al-Muzzammil Ruku 1, ayat 8
“So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion.”
ZIKR WITH ABUNDANCE: Surah Al-Ahzab Ruku 6, ayat 41
“O ye who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance.”
ZIKR BELOW ONES BREATH & MORNING AND EVENING: Surah Al-A’raf Ruku 24. ayat 205
"And do bring your Lord to remembrance in your very soul, with humility and in reverence, without loudness in words, in the mornings and evening, and be not of those who are unheedful.''
ZIKR BY THE SKIN AND THE HEART: Surah Az-Zumar Ruku 3. Ayat 23
“Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful message in the form of a Book consistent with itself (Yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble there at; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah's praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides therewith whom He pleases but such as Allah leaves to stray can have none to guide.”
ZIKR STANDING, SITTING AND RECLINING: Surah Al-e-Imran Ruku 19. ayat 191
“Men who celebrate the praises of Allah standing sitting and lying down on their sides and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth (with the thought): "Our Lord! not for naught hast thou created (all) this! Glory to thee! give us salvation from the penalty of the fire.”
ZIKR STANDING, SITTING AND RECLINING: Surah Nisa Ruku 15. Ayat 103
“When ye pass (congregational) prayers celebrate Allah's praises standing sitting down or lying down on your sides; but when ye are free from danger set up regular prayers: for such prayers are enjoined on believers at stated times.”
REWARD FOR THOSE WHO DO ZIKR WITH ABUNDANCE: Surah Al-Ahzab Ruku 5. Ayat 35
“For Muslim men and women for believing men and women for devout men and women for true men and women for men and women who are patient and constant for men and women who humble themselves for men and women who give in charity for men and women who fast (and deny themselves) for men and women who guard their chastity and for men and women who engage much in Allah's praise for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ZAKIR AND NON-ZAKIR: Surah Az-Zumar Ruku 3, ayat 22
“Is he whose bosom Allah hath expanded for the Surrender (unto Him), so that he followeth a light from His Lord, (as he who disbelieveth)? Then woe unto those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah. Such are in plain error.”

Remembrance of Allah

Keep remembering Allah as much as you can and this should mean a lot. This is what Quran and Hadith tell you by way of command, and describe to you many many virtues of "Zikr" which is also by no means difficult. How can you ignore it then, disobey the command, lose the virtues and be a loser ? There is hardly any restriction in the remembrance of Allah in the number of times or counts or time or rosary or "Tasbih" or ablution or "Wudu" or facing Mecca or any direction or a particular place or in one sitting or more. Thus, you have freedom and choice to suite yourself. What is the problem then ? If you like to count on a "Tasbih" (Prayer-beads or rosary) so that you may easily keep the count or may not simply forget or fall asleep, then it is infact more convenient and even better to use a Tasbih. Do not be bothered and this is not showing off, if you do not have a bad intent. Do not do it to show the people that you are virtuous or pious. It would be wrong to do anything to show to people as well as not to do something simply because of people (that they may imagine this or that, so hide and conceal). "Look" at Allah always, not people and not yourself in all your actions. Otherwise, the devil would deceive you and keep you from the remembrance of Allah (or Zikrullah). You may say, "Why this Zikr on the tongue when the heart is deeply involved in the world and worldly sins ? What good can it do.?" Beware ! that this idea is from the devil who would be very pleased if you lose the virtues of Zikr by any of his tricks. The truth of matter is that when you start the Zikr with the right intent in your heart you will be rewarded with the virtues of Zikr and this is due to the right intent. Nothing will change it, even if other idea come and go, and even if your heart gets involved in other directions as well. Now, thanks to Allah, the devil cannot deceive you.

Practice "Zikr" in your free time and try go get full attention from your heart as far as possible. All you have to do is to simply stop from intentionally thinking in other directions and thereby willfully bringing in silly ideas and evil thoughts.

The Holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to remember Allah all the times (Hadith). Let there be obedience and remembrance, but no sin and no forgetfulness in your life. And, do consult a shaikh (with the right qualifications) for your spiritual guidance.

Quran (9:18) : "Therefore remember Me (Allah), I will remember you."

Quran (3:191) : "Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting and reclining, and consider the creation of heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord ! You created not this in vain. Glory be to You ! Save us from the fire of Hell."

Quran (7:205) : "And remember you Lord within yourself (in the heart) humbly and with awe, below your breath, at morning and evening (i.e. always). And let you not be among those who neglect."

Quran (13:27-28) : "And Allah guides to Himself all who turn to Him, who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest !"
The root of this rest is the relationship with Allah developed as a result of this Zikr.

Quran (24:37-38) : "In the mosque are such people who remember, praise and glorify Allah. "Men whom neither merchandise nor sale deprives from remembrance of Allah and constancy in prayers and paying to the poor their due ; who fear a day when hearts and eyeballs will be overturned. That Allah may reward them with the best of what they did, and increase reward for them of His bounty. Allah gives blessings without stint to whom He will"

Quran (29:45) : "And verily remembrance of Allah is most important."

Quran (33 : 41-42) : "O you who believe ! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify Him early and late."

Quran (63:9) : "O you who believe ! Let no your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so they are the losers."

Quran (73:8) : "So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself with a complete devotion."

Quran (87:14-15) : "He is successful who grows (in self-purification), and remembers the name of his Lord and prays."

1.Hadith: (According to Abu Hurairah & Abu Sa'eed) : "Those who get together to remember Allah, angels around them, Allah has His mercy upon them, and their heart find rest & peace" (Muslim)

2.Hadith: (According to Abu Musa): "One who remembers his Lord and other who does not, are like alive and dead (respectively)."
Remembrance of Allah is the soul in a Muslim's life. (Bukhari & Muslim)

3.Hadith: (According to Abu Hurairah): "Allah says, "I'm with my servant when he remembers me. If he remembers me to himself, then I remember him to Myself. And if he remembers Me in a gathering (or crowd), then I remember him in a much better gathering (that of angels & prophets)" (Bukhari & Muslim)

The remembering of Allah to Himself means that no body else knows this other than God. Much better gathering does not necessarily imply that each every person is better than each and every person here, and this explains the exemption for the Holy Prophet Mohammad's (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) company during his life on the earth. He is the next best to God.

4.Hadith: (According to Anas: "When you pass through the gardens of paradise, do eat the fruits there well". The Holy Companions enquired, "What are these gardens of paradise ?" The Holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) replied, "Meeting and gatherings for Allah's remembrance or Zikr" (Tirmizi)

5.Hadith: (According to Abu Hurairah): "he will be a loser from God who sits somewhere but forgets to remember Allah, and who lies somewhere but fails to remember Allah" (Abu Daood). The upshot is that you must remember Allah at all occasions and places, so that you may no be a loser.

6.Hadith: (According to Abdullah bin Bisr): "A person asked the holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam), "There are so many things to do in the Islamic Shari'ah (and he probably meant Nafl or optional deeds or virtuous deeds in general since the obligatory ones are not so many). Please Just tell me something (that may suffice) if I take it seriously". He replied, "Make sure that your tongue is always busy in Allah's remembrance or Zikr." (Tirmizi & Ibne Majah).

7.Hadith: (According to Abu Sa'eed): "The Holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) was asked, "Who shall be the most virtuous and the best person in the sight of God on the Day of Judgment among His servants." He replied, "Those men who remember Allah a lot, and those women who remember Allah a lot". Then, they asked him, "O Prophet ! Does he supersede even him who takes part in a Jihad (or holy war of defense) in the way of Allah ? "He replied, "Even if a person fights with the infidels and polytheists so bravely that his sword is broken and there is blood all over his body, the person who remembers Allah is better than him" (Ahmad & Tirmizi). Just as ablution (or Wudu) is for prayer (or Salah), similarly Jihad is also for Zikr of Allah, and the real thing has more virtue (in both cases).

8.Hadith: (According to Abdullah bin 'Umar): "There is a shine for everything, and the shine (or polish) for the hearts is Allah's remembrance (or Zikr)." (Behiqi)

9.Hadith: (According to Ibne 'Abbas) : "The devil sits clinging to a person's heart. When he remembers Allah, the devil gets lost but when he forgets, the devil puts evil thoughts" (Bukhari)

10.Hadith: (According to Ibne 'Umar): "Do not talk too much other than Allah's remembrance or Zikr as this hardens one's heart. And the farthest away from Allah is a hardened heart." (Tirmizi)
The shining and cleaning of heart is by good deeds and the hardening by bad deeds, and the root of both is in the heart's intent where thoughts plays a major role. Now, when you stop or forget Zikr, the devil then puts evil thoughts in the heart that lead to bad intent in the heart. As a result, the good deeds decrease or disappear and bad deeds increase and ruin you (until you repent). On the other hand, when one remembers Allah a lot, there are no evil thoughts, no evil intent, and no sin. Instead, there is good intent resulting in good deeds. Consequently do Zikr a lot, do good deeds and avoid sins. Repent promptly, the sooner the better if you sin, when you sin and as many times a you sin. Remember, your Lord is ever Compassionate, Forgiving and Merciful. The above traditions are in Mishkat.

11.Hadith: (According to Abu Sa'eed Khudri): "Many people remember Allah on soft comfortable beds in the world, and Allah shall reward them with high ranks in paradise" (Ibne 'Haban). Do Zikr a lot, even if you are rich.

12.Hadith: (According to Abu Sa'eed Khudri): "Do remember Allah a lot and so much that one may say: he is gone mad" (Ahmad, Abu Y'ali and Ibne'Haban)

13.Hadith: (According to Ibne 'Abbas): "Do remember Allah a lot and so much that the hypocrite may call you as a pretendor and an imposter" (Tirbrani)

14.Hadith: (According to Ma'az bin Jabal): "The People of paradise will have nothing to regret but for the moment on earth in which they forgot to remember Allah. They will be sorry for that". (Tibrani & Behiqi)
However, this will be painless as there is no pain in paradise.

15.Hadith: (According to lady Aaishah bin sa'd bin Abi Waqas): "My father went with the Holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) to a lady. She had date seeds (or small pieces of stone) and she was reciting "Subhanallah Subhanallah" on them. The Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) did not forbid this thing (and allowed) (Abu Daood, Tirmizi, Nisai, Ibne'Haban & Hakim)

This, then is the authority for the use of a Tasbih (or prayer beads or rosary).

Some of the simple, easy and highly viruous daily recitations that you must be doing your Zikr with are as follows:(From Hadith: According to Zaid Bin Kharijah, in Nisai)

1. La ilaha illallah (Add if you wish: Muhammadur Rasoolullah)
2. Subhanallah
3. Alhamdulillah
4. Allahu Akbar
5. La haula wala quwwata illa billah
6. Astaghfirullaha wa atoobu ilaih
7. Allahumma salli'aai Muhammad Wa 'ala aali Muhammad.

Quran (62:10) : "And remember Allah much, that you may be successful."

Quran (4:103) : "When you have performed (congregational) prayers, remember Allah standing, sitting down or lying down."

Quran (8:45) : "O you who believe ! when you meet a force, be firm and call Allah in remembrance much (and often); that you may prosper."

19.Hadith: "Once the Holy Prophet Mohammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) was asked who would be the most exalted among the servants of Allah on the Last Day ? He replied, "Those who do the Zikr of Allah, be they men or women."

20.Hadith: (According to Abu Hurairah): "Allah says, "when anyone remembers Me and his lips move in My Zikr, then I'm by his side."

21.Hadith: "The best of all Zikr's is La ilaha illallah" or the holy Kalima.

22.Hadith: (According to Abu Hurairah): "The (third) Kalimah of : 'Subhanallahi walhamdulillahi wala'ilaha illallahu'wallahu Akbar' is dear to me that the entire world on which the sun shines."

23.Hadith: "Whosoever will recite after each Salah: Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdu lillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times, and at the end of it, the (fourth) Kalimah of 'La ilaha illallah wa'hdahu la sharika lah, lahul muliku wa lahul'hamd, wa huwa alak kulli shain qadeer' - all his sins will be forgiven even if they were as much as the foam of a sea."

24.Hadith: (According to Abu Huairah): " There are two phrases that are very light on the tongue, very heavy (in your favour) in the balance of deeds, and loved by Allah : Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, subhanallahil 'Azeem.

25.Hadith: "The superiority of the Word of God (i.e. Holy Quran) over any other word is the same as the superiority of Allah over any of His creatures". Read Quran everyday. It is a very good Zikr.

26.Hadith: (According to Abu Imamah): "O people ! read Quran. On the day of Judgment. Quran will intercede for those who used to read (or recite) it (in the worldly life)".

Quran (33:56) : "Lo ! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe ! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation". This means send and recite Durood and Salam

28.Hadith: "One who sends blessings (or Durood Sharif) on me, once, Allah confers then favors on him". Also in another tradition, "Allah will forgive his ten sins and give him a rise (by ten degrees in rank)"

29.Hadith: "There are many angels of Allah on a round with the special duty of carrying to me at once Durood (or the blessings) on me send by any follower of mine."

30.Hadith: "Nearest to me on the Day of Judgment will be one who sends Durood (or blessings) on me oftener."

31.Hadith: "That man is a big miser in whose presence my name is taken (or mentioned) and he does not offer Durood Sharif".

32.Hadith: "May he be disgraced in whose presence my name is mentioned and he fails to offer Durood Sharif". Always recite Durood !

Quran (28:8) : "O you who belive ! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance ! It may be that your Lord will remit (and clean) from you your evil deeds and bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow."

Quran (5:74) : "Why turn they not to Allah (in repentance or "Taubah" and seek His forgiveness ? Allah is Oft -Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Quran (6:54) : "And when those who believe in Our revelations come to you say: Peace be upon you ! Your Lord has prescribed for Himself mercy, that, whoso of you does evil and repents afterward thereof and does right (for him) lo ! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

36.Hadith: "Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with good a one and it will wipe it out, and behave well towards people."

37.Hadith: "Allah says, "O My servants ! you commit follies (or sins) day and night and I can forgive them all. So seek My forgiveness. I will forgive."

38.Hadith: "God extends the Arm of mercy and forgiveness every night so that the sinners of the day may repent and seek His pardon, and every day so that the sinner of the night may repent and seek His pardon. And, it shall be like this with Allah till the sun rises from the West near the Doomsday."

39.Hadith: "One who repents (does Taubah or seeks Allah's forgiveness or is sorry in his (or her) heart) after sin, becomes (so pure and clean) as if he never sinned". Allah be praised !

40.Hadith: "A man sinned and then he prayed a Allah ( in repentance) : O Lord ! Forgive me but I have sinned. Upon this, the Lord said: My servant knows that there is a God who can punish him for his sins as well as forgive. I have forgiven the sin of My servant'. This man did not sin as long as the Lord wished, after which he again went astray, fell into transgression and sinned. He once again prayed to Allah (in repentance) : O Lord ! I have sinned (I'm sorry) Forgive me. The Lord observed My servant knows that there is a God who can chastise (or punish) him for sinning as well as forgive. I have forgiven the sin of My (sinning) servant. This man remained free from sin as long as the Lord wished, and then sinned again. once again he (was sorry and) prayed Allah (in repentance) O Lord ! I have sinned. Forgive me. Allah said" My servant knows for certain; that there is a Lord Who can punish as well as forgive him for his sin. I have forgiven the sin of My servant". Allah will do the same with you. if you repent. Good news for us all !.

41.Hadith: "Blessed, indeed is the person in whose record the profusion of Taubah is written. "Repent a lot. Repent when you sin.

Quran: "Allah accepts the repentance (or Taubah) of those who do evil in ignorance and then turn quickly (in repentance) to Allah. These are they towards whom Allah will turn in mercy ; for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom. The forgiveness is not for those who do ill deeds (or sin) until, when death faces one of them, he says: "Lo ! I repent now ; nor yet for those who die while they are disbelievers (or Kafirs). For such we have prepared a painful doom."

If you are not dead then repent now. The Merciful Allah wants to forgive you. Remember Allah and never forget Him.
